Nyarlathotep Symbol: Is There an Official Sigil for the Crawling Chaos?
AURYN EditorialQuick answer: There is no official Nyarlathotep sigil created by H. P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft did not establish a canonical emblem for the Crawling Chaos, and the symbols now presented as “Nyarlathotep sigils” come from later artists, games and fan traditions. That fits a character whose fiction emphasises multiple forms rather than one fixed appearance.
Nyarlathotep in Lovecraft's work
Nyarlathotep first appeared in "Nyarlathotep", a prose poem written in 1920 and published in The United Amateur in November that year. There he is a mysterious showman from Egypt who travels from city to city, and in his wake civilisation collapses. He returns in later works, including The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, the sonnet sequence Fungi from Yuggoth and "The Haunter of the Dark", as the messenger and soul of the Outer Gods.
A god of a thousand forms
Lovecraft gave Nyarlathotep many shapes rather than one, from a pharaoh-like man to a monstrous presence in the dark. That shapelessness is part of the character, and it is one reason why no single emblem ever became canonical.
Where modern sigils come from
Designs labelled "the sigil of Nyarlathotep" come from role-playing games, artwork and online communities inspired by Lovecraft. Some are well made and widely recognised, but they are modern creations. For another case of a later sign becoming more famous than the original, see our guide to Lovecraft symbols and its section on the Elder Sign.
Nyarlathotep in jewellery
A Nyarlathotep design is a homage to Lovecraft's most mercurial creation and to the creative tradition his work inspired. See the AURYN Nyarlathotep charm.
Frequently asked questions
Did Lovecraft create a Nyarlathotep symbol?
No canonical sigil is established in Lovecraft’s fiction. The character is defined through names, roles and changing manifestations rather than through one fixed emblem.
Where do modern Nyarlathotep sigils come from?
They come from later creative traditions, including role-playing games, illustration and fan communities. A design can be recognisable within one of those traditions without being an original Lovecraft symbol.
Is a modern Nyarlathotep sigil part of Lovecraft canon?
Not simply because it is widely reproduced. A later symbol should be attributed to the work, artist, game or community that developed it rather than presented as a sigil created by Lovecraft.
