Mate Masie Meaning: 'What I Hear, I Keep'
AURYN EditorialMate masie means "what I hear, I keep" in Twi. The Adinkra symbol of that name stands for wisdom, knowledge and prudence: the understanding that comes from listening carefully and holding on to what one learns.
Listening as wisdom
In Akan culture, wisdom is closely tied to listening: to elders, to proverbs, to the counsel of others. Mate Masie expresses that value. To "keep" what one hears is to take it seriously, reflect on it and let it guide one's actions. The Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art is among the institutions that document the symbol.
The symbol
The design is usually made of four linked forms, often read as ears or as the joining of what is heard and what is kept, arranged in a compact, balanced pattern.
