Fawohodie Meaning: The Adinkra Symbol of Independence
AURYN EditorialFawohodie means "independence" or "freedom" in Twi, and the Adinkra symbol of that name stands for liberty and self-determination. It is often explained with a proverb that pairs freedom with responsibility.
Independence and its responsibilities
The symbol is commonly associated with the saying Fawohodie ene obre na enam, usually translated as "independence comes with its responsibilities". The point is characteristic of Adinkra thought: freedom is not only a release from control, but a burden one must be ready to carry.
A resonance for Ghana
In 1957 Ghana became the first colony in sub-Saharan Africa to win its independence, and a symbol of freedom naturally gained special resonance in the years that followed. It remains one of the Adinkra designs most associated with national and personal self-determination.
Fawohodie in jewellery
A Fawohodie design is a sign of freedom, and of the responsibility that comes with it.
