Erzulie: The Lwa of Love in Haitian Vodou

AURYN Editorial

Erzulie, or Ezili, is not a single spirit but a family of lwa in Haitian Vodou, connected with love, beauty, womanhood and motherhood. Two of her forms are especially well known, and they could hardly be more different.

Ezili Freda

Ezili Freda is the lwa of love, beauty and luxury. She is elegant and refined, loves perfume, fine clothes and jewellery, and is associated with the colours pink and white. In Haitian homes and temples she is often represented by Catholic prints of the Virgin as Mater Dolorosa, the sorrowing mother pierced with swords, whose finery and tears suit Freda's character: she has everything, yet longs for a perfect love she can never quite find.

Ezili Dantor

Ezili Dantor is a fierce, protective mother, a lwa of the Petwo nation. She defends women and children, and she is associated with the struggle for freedom. She is often represented by images of a Black Madonna, commonly identified with Our Lady of Częstochowa, holding a child, and she is said to bear scars on her cheek.

Many Ezilis

Freda and Dantor are two faces of a larger family that together express the range of women's lives: love and desire, motherhood and grief, gentleness and ferocity.

Erzulie in jewellery

An Erzulie design, often inspired by the heart-shaped vèvè of Ezili Freda, is fitting for a spirit who loves beautiful things; worn respectfully, it honours one of Vodou's most beloved lwa.
