Calli Meaning: The House Sign of the Aztec Calendar
AURYN EditorialCalli means "house" in Nahuatl, and Calli is the third of the twenty day signs of the Aztec 260-day calendar. In the codices it is drawn as a small building seen from the side, often with a doorway and a decorated roof.
A year-bearer
Calli had a special role. Only four day signs could name the years of the 365-day calendar: Acatl (reed), Tecpatl (flint), Calli (house) and Tochtli (rabbit). Each was linked with a direction, and Calli was associated with the west. A year such as "2 House" took its name from one of these signs.
Home and shelter
As a sign, Calli naturally evokes home, shelter and belonging, the associations most people feel in the image today.
Calli in jewellery
A Calli design references home, the Aztec calendar and a birth date in the 260-day count.
